Many witches use tarot in their magickal practice. Tarot cards are a divination practice that can help you understand more about your current life situations and future.
Tarot cards have been around since about 1490 but were originally used as playing cards, not as divination tools until around the 1700s.
Tarot is something that many witches use even if just during sabbats. Divination doesn’t need to be a daily practice and some witches only use divination during special occasions. A few occasions that could be a great time for divination are:
- Birthdays
- Big Decisions
- Sabbats (Samhain, Yule, Imbolc, Ostara, Beltane, Litha, Lughnasadh, and Mabon)
- Breakups
- Engagements
- Job Opportunities
- Trying for/having a baby

Where To Buy Your Tarot Cards
You can purchase your decks online, but I would reccommend buying them in person if you have a shop near you.

How To Read Tarot Cards
Reading and understanding the cards are all about interpretation. Two different people could draw the same card, but interpret it in totally different ways. Here are some things to consider while practicing divination.
- Choose the deck that speaks to you. Don’t just choose the first desk that you see. Some people think that you can’t buy your first deck and it has to be gifted to you. But not everyone has someone to gift them metaphysical items. Get a feel for a few decks and let your intuition guide you to the right one for you.
- Set your intention for your reading. Do you want guidance for a specific problem or a glimpse into the next week or month? Intention setting is how you direct your energy to a specific issue to get information.
- Shuffle your cards while focusing on your intention. Focus on intention and use your intuition to guide you when to stop and for which cards to pull.
- When you pull your cards, lay them out and get a look at them. What do they mean? What do you feel? You can research the cards and find out exactly what they mean, but it might not be exactly correct for your situation. Follow your heart and intuition about what the cards are trying to tell you.
